Mortal Engines Review

Entertaiment News - IGN Entertainment - Thu, 12/13/2018 - 20:55

Mortal Engines is the big-budget live-action steampunk movie fans of that subgenre have always wanted, complete with stunning visuals and top-notch world-building. Christian Rivers makes his directorial debut after working in visual effects with frequent collaborators (and co-writers and co-producers) Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens and delivers the kind of ambitious blockbuster we haven’t seen in years.

Mortal Engines is so eager to show you what it’s got, that the film starts while the Universal logo is still on screen, as we see purple-hued bombs that start going off in various locations on the famous globe on the logo. Visually and scale-wise, this is an oversized Fury Road on steroids. Based on the novels by Philip Reeve, we start with two literal cities chasing each other, spitting up smoke and dirt as the wheeled monstrosities make their slow way across a vast and desolated European countryside. London shoots massive harpoons at the smaller city, while teeny tiny trees are decimated beneath the giant wheels of the metropolis. As if the visual connections to the Wasteland of Max Rockatansky weren’t enough, I wouldn’t blame you for expecting to see Furiosa after listening to Junkie XL’s grandiose score here.

Netflix has been under fire recently for its cancelations of DaredevilLuke Cage, and Iron Fist, which had less to do with viewership numbers and more to do with expensive licensing fees the streaming provider pays to Marvel. Even with these setbacks, Netflix had several hits in 2018, including The Haunting of Hill House and Narcos: Mexico, among others.

The launch of the Nintendo Switch, the world’s first hybrid portable home console, has created a new niche market for peripheral creators to fill. Gamers would want the same class of headphone and microphone quality they enjoyed on their home consoles, just reduced into a highly portable form factor for play-anywhere Switch gaming.

HyperX has accepted the challenge with its $49.99 HyperX Cloud Earbuds (See them on Amazon), which are advertised as being optimized for the Nintendo Switch. But is this just a keyword play, planting “Switch gaming” in the marketing of a standard-issue set of earbuds? Or do HyperX Cloud Earbuds actually provide a heavenly Switch experience, especially when compared against a conventional headset? I decided to find out.

If Beale Street Could Talk Review

Entertaiment News - IGN Entertainment - Thu, 12/13/2018 - 19:19

This review was originally published from the New York Film Festival in October. The movie opens in limited release on December 14, and wide on December 25, 2018.

Barry Jenkins is a director of rare precision and skill in bringing out the soul of his films. Following up one of the most deserving Best Picture Oscar winners since the turn of the century, the Moonlight helmer has devised a visually nurturing love letter to author James Baldwin. An adaptation of his 1974 novel of the same name, If Beale Street Could Talk is packed to the brim with details that instate a dreamlike quality on this Harlem period romance.

With all the racism in today’s world seemingly getting louder, Jenkins smartly chooses to keep the novel within the era it was written to send a message of love that feels more classic than contemporary, while also dealing with issues disturbingly still relevant today. The script not only discusses the injustices our legal system serves on black people, especially the men, it juxtaposes them against the ongoing sexual assault conversation to tell a rich, complex story that digs into the layers of societal issues currently making headlines.
